Hazel Rush

Hazel studied Fine Art at Sunderland College of Art receiving a Diploma in Art and Design with second class honours. She spent some time in Sweden and Germany working in ceramics. Her teaching career spans 30 years Head of Art teaching children 11 – 16 yrs. and in Adult Education.

After retiring from Head of Dept. at a local school she started her own studio at home. It became very popular and almost full time with seven classes a week.  She enjoyed the teaching of watercolour and also managed to continue to exhibit her own work at local exhibitions . There was a growing interest in plant forms and flowers so 12 years later she decided to end the studio and develop her own art work. With the help of Isabel Bartholmew she studied Botanical Art with the S.B.A and received a distinction for her work. She went on to exhibit her botanical work with the S.B.A. and by then the Iceni Botanical Artists were established.

Now retired from teaching she enjoys a more leisurely life. She works most days for a couple of hours and her current work is taken from plants in their own garden.  She is now developing a freer approach to her work bringing in a more imaginative composition. The attention to detail is still very important but she is developing a more individual style.  Norfolk  is still a big part of her work.

The Fullers Mill Project was a big undertaking for all members but she personally enjoyed the challenge and produced 12 paintings some of the house and garden others of the water areas and also trees and plant studies.
